Description of 1971 Caldecott Medal-winner, A Story, A Story

Many African folk tales are called Spider Stories. Spider stories tell about small, insignificant people or animals outwitting those more powerful by doing daring acts of bravery. A Story, A Story retells the African legend of how Spider stories came to be.

The Spider Stories traveled across the waters from Africa in the ships that delivered slaves to the Americas. The fables have survived being told from family to family into the present. The hero of this story is Ananse. He has become Anancy in the Caribbean isles, while he survives as 'Aunt Nancy' in the southern United States. You will learn many African words in this story and will also learn about the legends from another land and another time.
