Synopsis

A big brown bear follows a buzzing bee in hopes of finding honey. Two geese tag along, followed by three blind mice. When the big brown bear finds honey in bees' nest, a topsy-turvy escape follows. School Library Journal commented, "those in search of cheerful stories with an old-fashioned feel will enjoy it." - an enchanting, humorous learn-to-read picture book

Description

The full-color pictures occupy most of the space on the pages. The illustrations created by Vanessa Cabban, with their blue skies, abundant sunshine, and bright flowers, contribute significantly to the book's appeal.

Why I chose this book

You can click here to hear my granddaughter, Maddie, read about the adventures of the brown bear and his followers. I chose this book because five-year-old Maddie liked to read it over and over again. The phrases are repeated which makes it a good choice for a "learn-to-read" book. The other reason for my choice are the great illustrations. "Two greedy geese spotted one tip-toeing bear." Vanessa Cabban has created that tip-toeing bear completely.

Featured Picture Book

Fairy in a Dairy

If you read A Fairy in the Dairy to a child, it will tickle your funny bone. The play on dairy words is really fun. ("Excitement churned through Buttermilk Hollow" and "Mooo-ve to Buttermilk Hollow. It's udderly delightful.") . .

Caps for Sale

Esphyr Slobodkina has recreated an old folk tale about a peddlar selling caps and a band of monkeys who have their own ideas for those hats, monkey business. Ms. Slobodkina's bright colorful illustrations of the gray, brown, blue, and red caps all balancing on the peddlars head and then on the heads of the mischievious monkeys adds to the fun of Caps for Sale.
