Why a 4th - 8th grader will like this book

There are few other books I have read that have touched me emotionally as much as Bridge to Terabithia. I ached for Jess and for Leslie as if they were my own children undergoing such pain and misunderstanding. This is a book that tells in beautiful language what it means to be a real friend. If you are 9 - 12 years of age, I believe you will identify very much with the feelings of Jess or Leslie.

Synopsis

Jess Aaron's greatest ambition is to be the fastest boy in the 5th grade. He counts that goal as good as accomplished until a GIRL moves in next door. Leslie Burke challenges that goal and challenges Jess to understand true friendship--its joys and its sorrows. -- a 5th - 8th grade must-read book

Description

Katherine Paterson's realistic story is one to savor. The actions, thoughts and emotions of the characters are authentic. As the story unfolds the reader is given a peek at the inner feelings of the characters. Each character, if not likable, is at least understood. At its core, Bridge to Terabithia is a story about two friends, the private world they create for themselves, and the public world in which they must live. Into this story come the school bullies, the homeroom and music teachers, and the families of Jess and Leslie.

This book was originally written in 1972 and has some references to TV shows and current events of the '70's. The conflicts of the characters and the feelings of loneliness and of non acceptance are as current as today's newspaper headlines.

Featured Picture Book

Gavin Curtis's beautifully told story of family love, in spite of differences in opinions, and E.B. Lewis's lush watercolor paintings capture a very special time in US history.
