Why You Will Enjoy Shiloh

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has created characters that come alive in this Newbery Medal award-winning chapter book. The reader really cares about Marty and his relationship with his dad and about the abused dog Shiloh. Shiloh pulls at the heartstrings without being overly "sticky." Shiloh also presents good lessons i.e. not being overly judgmental without knowing a person well and of not stretching the truth without understanding the possible consequences. This is a dog story for a junior reader that is engrossing from the first page to the last.

Synopsis

"When Marty Preston comes across a young beagle in the hills behind his home, it's love at first sight--and also big trouble." so states the back cover of Shiloh. Marty learns many lessons about himself in accomplishing his goal of keeping the dog, Shiloh.

Description

Shiloh is set in the hills of West Virginia. Marty's family has enough money only for bare necessities, certainly no money for a dog. This is a boy-and-his-dog story, but it is so much more. Marty learns how little lies lead to bigger ones that can hurt those he loves. He discovers that by using his ingenuity and focused determination, he can accomplish his dream. And, he learns that one who seems a villain isn't alway unredeemable.--a realistic story about a boy and a beagle and of the love that binds them together.
