Why Your Pre School Child will enjoy Have You Seen My Duckling?

Nancy Tafuri's Caldecott award-winning picture book for toddlers is perfectly suited to the very young child. It is almost entirely pictures. She understands how young children want to turn pages to see what is coming next. This simple story of a mama duck's love and concern for her missing duckling allows for quick page turns and for lingering as well.

Synopsis

Mama duck has 8 ducklings, but one morning one of them has disappeared. Mrs. Duck asks all the creatures that inhabit the pond if they have seen her duckling? Each page asks the same question with no response. The young "reader", if he or she searches the full-colored, full-page illustrations, can find the eighth duckling hiding just out of sight.

Description

This is a 1985 Caldecott Honor book filled with large, often two-page color illustrations. The words are few. This is a book for young toddlers. Adult readers are given leeway to add to the story of the one lost duckling. children will enjoy looking for the little duck hiding in a lily pad or behind a tree. The artwork frame of reference is the mama duck's environment. We are placed in the water with her, watching a beaver swim by, looking under the water to talk to fish, salamanders, frogs, and crabs, speaking face-to-face with a wood duck, and finally gathering at the water's edge for a night's sleep.
