Synopsis
Science Arts by MaryAnn Kohl and Jean Potter, a Bright Ideas for Learning Publication, offers 132 art and science activities appropriate for school, home, child care, homeschool, preschool, and children's museums
Description
Art and Science are intertwined in this activity book of 132 art projects. Scientific principles are illustrated through art in this hands-on activity book by Mary Ann Kohl. Each art project also defines a basic scientific truth. Each page contains one recipe-style experiment which includes simple instructions, clear illustrations, and suggestions for variations. Usually the required materials for the experiment (art work) are common household items.
ScienceArts is easy to use. Each page contains an icon telling age guidelines, materials needed, amount of adult supervision required, and seasonal suggestions. Besides giving the instructions for the art project, the author tells the scientific principle used in the art project.
The Chart of Contents lists projects that correspond to scientific principle. The Concept Index gives explanations of new words and scientific vocabulary. Another index provides a helpful way to find experiments by materials on hand or by alphabetical listing.
Why I chose this book
Most children I know love to be creative—to draw or fingerpaint or make items out of egg cartons or playdough. This book builds on that love by providing all sorts of suggested art projects using all the things kids love. But, it adds an extra dimension to each art project by adding an easily understood scientific explanation for each concept. I appreciate that the list of materials are the ordinary items one usually has at had. The icons on each page identifying age recommendation, time required, ease of accomplishment are very helpful. Each page also identifies the scientific principle (evaporation, for example) that will be part of the art project. This is a very creative useful book, particularly for grandparents or teachers of any kind.
