Why an Artistic Child Will Enjoy Bonjour, Mr. Satie
Tomie dePaola has sprinkled the pages of this book with illustrations in the style of Picasso and Matisse. The rivalry between the two artists was often intense. dePaola brings this fact to life and honors the respect the artists ultimately had for one another. I enjoyed looking at the two-page illustration found in the middle of Bonjour, Mr. Satie. It pictures the famous artists gathered at Gertrude’s salon. Tomie dePaola identifies the faces on the inside back flap of the jacket, but he only gives the first names, i.e. Ezra P. The first-name-only-clues have stimulated me to find out the last names (I did know Pound!) and also to learn a little more about these famous people. I believe Tomie dePaola wanted to familiarize younger children with some of the famous artists of the 1920’s by telling them an interesting story, but I think he also hoped that they would be encouraged to find out more about these interesting people’s lives.
Synopsis

Description
In Paris during the 1920’s artists gathered at the rue de Fleurus, Gertrude Stein’s salon, for lively conversation about the arts. In this story Uncle Satie has been invited to the salon to visit with the Americans living in Paris-- Gertrude (Stein) and Alice (Toklas). The fun begins when Pablo and Henri, famous painters, arrive with their new paintings, each claiming his is superior. Children will enjoy reading this book for the story and for the art work of dePaola. They will also be introduced to many of the famous artists that lived in Paris at this time. Visiting in Gertrude’s salon are Isadora Duncan, Pablo Picasso, Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, Claude Monet, Gertrude Stein, and others.
