Why You Will Enjoy this Book

Owen, by Kevin Henkes is a delightful Caldecott honor book. Owen, his mouse family and Mrs. Tweezer's expressions are humorous and easy to respond to. Any child will enjoy hearing of how Owen's blanket becomes 'accepted.'

This animal picture book offers a 'prop' for discussing behavior change with a child.
Publishers Weekly has said about Henkes' stories: Behind each book is a wide-open heart, one readers can't help but respond to, that makes all of his books of special value to children.

Experience Henkes' wide-open heart. Through his words and pictures Henkes allows you to feel Owen's unhappiness and his parents' loving attempt to wean him from his blanket.

Synopsis

Owen's favorite companion is his fuzzy yellow blanket. His blanket goes wherever he goes. Mrs. Tweezers disapproves and as the start of school grows ever nearer, she makes many suggestions to Owen's mother of how he could be weaned from his yellow blanket. In the end Owen's mother uses her creativity to please everyone.

Description

This 22-page Caldecott Medal picture book is filled with colorful descriptive pictures of Owen, his yellow blanket, his family, and Mrs. Tweezers. The expressions of the mice characters are very "people-like." The words are minimum, but they are not necessarily easy-to-read words. The story is meant to be read by a reader to a child. Yet, because the words are few and are so familiar, a beginning reader, with some help, could master the text.

What others said about this book

About Kevin Henkes

Kevin Henkes

From his earliest years in grade school Kevin Henkes wanted to be an artist. In high school his English teacher encouraged him to consider writing as well. Henkes realized he could both write and draw by becoming an author / illustrator of children’s books.

He flew from his hometown Racine, Wisconsin to New York with his portfolio when he was only 19. Never believing he would find a publisher, his dream was nonetheless realized when Greenwillow Publications accepted his first book, All Alone. Since 1981 and that first book, Henkes has not stopped writing. He has written over 30 books. Included among those are Olive’s Ocean, Newbery Honor Award in 2004; Caldecott Honor Award-winner, Owen in 1994, and Kitten’s First full Moon, Caldecott Medal Book of 2005.

Kevin Henkes is married to artist Laura Dronzek. They have two children---a 10 year-old son and an 8 year-old daughter---and live in Madison, Wisconsin.
