Why You will Treasure The Story of the Orchestra

I enjoy classical music. I realize that this love began as a young person of nine or ten because my dad loved opera and great orchestral music and he played classical LP's continually. I never thought this music was "strange" or "weird" because this is what I experienced at home from a young age.

Robert Devine's Story of the Orchestra can become a catalyst for creating a love of and better understanding of classical music for the child in your family. The wit and often humorous illustrations, the interesting facts about instruments and biographical information, and most importantly the wide variety of music on the CD can encourage young people today to begin to enjoy or to further learn about classical music.

Synopsis

Listen while you learn about the musical instruments, the music and the composers who wrote the music. This Junior Reader 96-page book highlights 15 composers from the baroque period to the modern era by giving a brief biography, sharing interesting tid-bits, and by choosing a selection of the composer’s music to listen to. The Story of the Orchestra also highlights each of the instruments that make up a symphony orchestra. A CD track illustrates how the instrument sounds and is used within a symphonic piece.

Description

The Composers are highlighted in the first 20 pages. You will meet Vivaldi and Bach, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mahler, Debussy, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Gershwin, Copland, and Bernstein. A brief biography is given of each as well as an introduction to the period, Baroque to Modern, in which they wrote. There are many interesting facts about the music, the audiences, and of the lives of the composers. Part II covers 55 pages and is entitled the orchestra instruments. Here the reader is introduced to the various sections of the orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboards) and the individual instruments that compose the section. There is a wealth of information in this section, information about pitch, how an instrument is played, the history, and some of the famous instrument makers. A person of any age can find something new and interesting in this book. The included CD has 37 selections from the greatest composers—over an hour’s worth of music.

A Suggestion on how to use the birthday information:

If you are a teacher or parent, you may want to match a music project to a composer's birthday. Or, you may want to celebrate birthdays of the month for both musicians and students.
