Synopsis
In How to Take Your Grandmother to the Museum by Lois Wyse and Molly Rose Goldman the granddaughter takes her grandma to an exciting place she has never been—-The American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Grandma is told to “wear comfortable shoes” because they will be doing lots of walking. What follows is an adventure in pictures and words as Grandmother and Granddaughter visit Dinosaur Hall, the Diorama exhibits, the Hall of Ocean Life, the rocks, gems, and minerals exhibit, and the human biology exhibit. This is an educational book about what is found in a Natural History Museum; it is also a story about grandparent-grandchild relationship building.
Description
This picture book is a unique look inside several of the exhibits at the American Natural History Museum. The enthusiasm of the granddaughter for the exhibits is evident as she tells her grandma about one of her favorite plant-eaters, the Apatosaurus and urges her grandma to “come on, grandma” to see the rocks, gems and mineral collection. In a real ‘switch of roles’ Molly gives information to her grandmother. “‘That’s an amethyst geode,’ I told her.” So explains Molly when grandma says she loves the purple rock. Because the granddaughter is the narrator, the language is easy to understand for any child 4 years and older.
The last three pages are “a few words from Molly about the exhibits.” It contains photographs of several actual exhibits, the pages where they are seen within the book, and a further description about them.
Why I chose this book
This book appealed to me on two levels. At the first level it is a wonderful educational book. The reader is taken inside the Natural History Museum to several exhibits where the different exhibits are closely examined and talked about by the granddaughter, Molly. At the second level it is a wonderful example of the love between granddaughter and grandmother. The dialog between the two is really wonderful. Grandma affirms the granddaughter by allowing her to be the guide and the one in charge for the day.
