Why Parents will like What to Expect
When Mommy's Having a Baby

One of the "What to Expect Kids" series, this book prepares a young sibling for a new baby's birth. A very nice addition is the section at the end of the book entitled, "A Word to Parents."

Ms. Murkoff gives some advice on how to use this book. She writes, "I suggest you read through the book first, so that you'll be familiar enough with the content that you can mentally add or edit as you read it to your child....Keep your explanations honest, straightforward, and accurate, but geared to your child's level of comprehension..."

Parents will appreciate the simple explanations in text and pictures. Murkoff's book serves as an aid (or notes) to parents as they explain the changes in mommy's body to their young child.

Synopsis

This is a book for big brothers and sisters and for parents who are looking for a straight-forward, simplified way of explaining what happens to Mommy when she becomes pregnant.

Description

Using a friendly dog named Angus as the narrator, Ms. Murkoff answers the probable questions a young child may have about mommy's pregnancy. Answers are given in simple, yet correct terminology accompanied by drawings and diagrams. The questions addressed are:

Where is the baby?

How did the baby get in there?

How can a baby fit inside Mommy?

What makes the baby grow?

How can I help?

How does the baby eat?

Can the baby hear and see me?

What does the baby do all day?

Why doesn't Mommy feel well sometimes?

Why does Mommy go to the doctor so much?

When will the baby come out? How does it get out?

Caps for Sale

Esphyr Slobodkina has recreated an old folk tale about a peddlar selling caps and a band of monkeys who have their own ideas for those hats, monkey business. Ms. Slobodkina's bright colorful illustrations of the gray, brown, blue, and red caps all balancing on the peddlars head and then on the heads of the mischievious monkeys adds to the fun of Caps for Sale.
