Synopsis
“Look at Me” contains scores of creative learning activities for babies and toddlers in order to encourage positive interaction between parents or caregivers and their children.
Description
The 228-page book is divided into sections organized by developmental levels. Haas has included sections on making toys, on imaginative play, and on learning games, poems, songs, and fingerplays as well as a section on encouraging positive self-image. A very useful chapter lists items you will want to collect for the projects: egg cartons, cottage cheese containers, Styrofoam trays, six-pack rings, etc. It suggests buying a hole puncher, foam blocks, and colored cellophane, for example. There is a chapter entitled "expert" advice, i.e., thoughts from a gifted teacher or from grandparents, for example, and a chapter that includes "easy, nutritious recipes." This is a comprehensive book that's simply all about being involved in your child’s development.
Why I chose this book
Parents, grandparents, daycare staff are so busy. I believe they truly want to interact with their child but may find it difficult to organize the activities, or even know what activities are appropriate for a child’s developmental stage. "Look at Me" lays out all the possibilities, giving age-appropriateness, materials needed to complete an art or craft, and instructions on how to do it. This appears to be a very useful, helpful book.
What others said about this book
"This book offers suggestions and ideas to help parents, teachers, and babies communicate and share. It is hoped that these fun, easy-to-do, success-oriented activities will result in parents and other caretakers feeling more secure and happy in their role, thus forging a closer bond with their babies and toddlers that will last a lifetime." Carolyn Haas
"...simply packed with things to do…written with a very tangible respect for the young child." Chinaberry Book Service
