Synopsis
This treasured story by the author of "Goodnight Moon" tells the tale of a lonely young fir tree brought to the bedside of a lame boy on Christmas morning. With the passage of time, both the fir tree and the lame boy's futures are changed.
Description
This Christmas picture book for young children by Margaret Wise Brown tugs at the heart strings. A wind-blown seed carried outside the forest boundary caused a young fir tree to grow up alone, away from the other fir trees. Many of the other trees are chosen as Christmas trees. It isn't until a man with a shovel comes looking for a little tree that the little fir tree is chosen. The tree is selected to be a living Christmas tree for a young bed-ridden boy. The tree stays in the window of the boy's bedroom until spring. Then the tree returns to the forest. The pattern continues for a few years until the Christmas that the man with the shovel does not come for the fir tree. The father and son come to the tree together. This is a beautiful, gentle text accompanied by warm, glowing paintings./p>
Why I chose this book
This is a timeless story that hearkens back to a time of caroling, cutting one's own Christmas tree, and of country living, surrounded by acres of pinetrees. The illustrations are all present-day. This blending of present and past images gives the story an ageless quality. Children are sure to want this Christmas story read again and again. The inspirational message of hope and the happy ending make this a good choice for one's Christmas library.
