Why You Will Enjoy this Book

Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes is delightful in so many ways.  The illustrations are colorful, humorous, and very expressive of Lilly's moods. The story is about the best in teachers and learning. Lilly loves school. Mr. Slinger relates well to his students (even though they are rodents.) He understands Lilly's unhappiness and because of his understanding is able to restore a relationship. A good choice for a back-to-school book, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse can be enjoyed by first graders and adults.

Synopsis

"Lilly loves everything about school, especially her teacher, but when he asks her to wait a while before showing her new purse, she does something for which she is very sorry later."

Description

What a cute story! Kevin Henkes has captured the essence of grade school life--the Friday fish sticks and chocolate milk, pointy pencils, squeaky chalk. Most of all Mr. Henkes expresses the qualities that make a teacher great in Lilly's mind. Mr. Slinger is a great teacher. He wears artistic shirts, glasses on a chain around his neck, and a different colored tie every day. He brings tasty snacks and arranges the desks in a semicircle. Lilly decides she wants to be a teacher when she grows up. Then comes the day of the new plastic purple purse that played a 'jaunty' tune when it was opened. Lilly couldn't help but interrupt the class with her excitement. When Lilly's purse is taken away for safe keeping by Mr. Slinger, Lilly has to deal with her sadness and then anger with her formerly admired teacher.

About Kevin Henkes

Kevin Henkes

From his earliest years in grade school Kevin Henkes wanted to be an artist. In high school his English teacher encouraged him to consider writing as well. Henkes realized he could both write and draw by becoming an author / illustrator of children’s books.
