Why You Will Like Kitten's First Full Moon

Kevin Henkes in his 2005 Caldecott medal winner, Kitten's First Full Moon has created expressions on kitten's face that you will love. As kitten chases the elusive dish of milk, it seems almost human. Certainly the expressions are human-like.

Kitten's First Full Moon is a good book to read to children at bedtime.  The pictures are lively, yet soothing; the prose is engaging yet almost of lullaby quality. This is a book toddlers and early readers will read again and again.

Synopsis

When kitten sees her 1st full moon, she believes it to be a giant bowl of milk. The kitten tries and tries to drink from the bowl of milk but encounters many disappointments.   In the light of the full moon, kitten is finally rewarded. This is a beginning reader picture book to treasure.

Description

Kitten's First Full Moon is a 2005 Caldecott medal winner. The picture book is 29 pages with more pictures than words making it a good beginning-to-read book.

The pictures are grey scale which emphasize the nighttime setting of the book. The white images of the moon and kitten contrast perfectly with the grey shadows of the night.

Kevin Henkes has used simple, easy to understand prose. Toddlers will be drawn to this little kitten and its adventure in the moonlight.

Because of the moonlight setting and gentle words, Kitten's First Full Moon is a good bedtime story.

About Kevin Henkes

Kevin Henkes

From his earliest years in grade school Kevin Henkes wanted to be an artist. In high school his English teacher encouraged him to consider writing as well. Henkes realized he could both write and draw by becoming an author / illustrator of children’s books.

He flew from his hometown Racine, Wisconsin to New York with his portfolio when he was only 19. Never believing he would find a publisher, his dream was nonetheless realized when Greenwillow Publications accepted his first book, All Alone. Since 1981 and that first book, Henkes has not stopped writing. He has written over 30 books. Included among those are Olive’s Ocean, Newbery Honor Award in 2004; Caldecott Honor Award-winner, Owen in 1994, and Kitten’s First full Moon, Caldecott Medal Book of 2005.

Kevin Henkes is married to artist Laura Dronzek. They have two children---a 10 year-old son and an 8 year-old daughter---and live in Madison, Wisconsin.
