Synopsis

Beautiful illustrations of seeds, plants, and the insects living in Jack's Garden make this picture book for early readers one to treasure.

Description

Paraphrasing "This is the House that Jack built," Jack's Garden follows the script with "this is the garden that Jack planted. These are the seeds that fell on the soil that made up the garden that Jack planted...." Accompanying each "verse" are illustrations showing the implements Jack used to plant his garden, the critters that live in the soil that made up the garden, the different appearance of the seeds that are planted, etc. Pictures of the common variety of birds visiting the garden, insects living in the garden, and flowers growing from the seeds all appear in this delightful book. The final page gives instructions on how to start one's own garden. After reading Jack's Garden, the reader will be hunting for the nearest seed catalog.

The full-color art was created with colored pencils on paper of different colors. The art work makes the book what it is. The illustrations bring a garden alive. Seen in Mr. Cole's artwork are the butterflies, the beetles, slugs, and larva. Here also are the foxglove, buttercup, poppy, phlox, and milkweed seeds. And, here are the warblers, swallows, bluebirds, barn swallows, and goldfinch with representation of their different eggs.

Why I chose this book

I was looking for a book that was a bit different---not a work of fiction but something for the 4-8 year-old that was a beautiful book and also educational. Jack's Garden answers this priority. Viewing the beautiful artwork the young reader can learn a lot about the natural world around him or her. Jack's garden is a book that will encourage a young person to love a piece of earth and the creatures that make the piece of earth their home. This book can be enjoyed from spring throughout the growing season. In the spring the young reader could participate in planting a garden; in summer he or she can investigate a growing garden to see what creatures call the garden, "home."

Pedro the Brave

This learn-to-read book is a tale of bravery and of outwitting a wolf. The tale is expressed in clever humorous rhyme. Pedro and his friends Dusty and Ronnie the horse were dancing and playing guitars under the bright August moon when the wolf joins their campfire and wants some soup. Click here to see more.
