Synopsis
Much to his delight Polar Bear Larry, who speaks, acts, and thinks like a human finds himself napping in a freezer full of ice cream. Larry consumes 1/8 ton of the ice cream, and when he tells the newspaper "I do not feel sick," the ice cream manufacturer knows he has discovered an Ice-Berg Ice Cream spokesperson.
Description
Larry isn't an ordinary, run-of-the-mill polar bear. To begin with, he lives in style in a New Jersey hotel that's named after him. He has a job as the hotel lifeguard and he never eats people. He does like ice cream, however, and when the local ice cream shop makes the mistake of letting him take a nap in their freezer, he eats more than 250 pounds of it. It isn't long before Larry's ice cream-eating exploits are famous and Larry himself is headed for a very unusual career change! Filled with humor, this fourth picture book in the Larry series demonstrates once again that life with a polar bear is anything but dull."
Why I chose this book
Larry, the polar bear is just too cool. He appropriated for himself many people characteristics, and he is just fun. The people of the town, the family that has installed him at the hotel, and most especially, the owner of Ice Berg Ice Cream, treat him as a peer. Yes, this is a fun book---for adults as well as the over-7-year-old reader. Jill Pinkwater has created cheery pictures on bright white pages that bring out Larry's personality.
