Scott Gustafson wrote about this collection of his illustrated fairy tales, “This book represents for me the longest ongoing project that I have ever undertaken. The initial ten paintings were commissioned for a series of collector’s plates and limited edition prints…Little did I realize that twelve years would elapse before the additional sixty-five fairy tales paintings would be completed, and this book would finally become a reality.” He continues that he used live models photographed in costume and acting out a scene in the story to create the authentic-looking paintings. He researched the furniture, architecture, and costumes that would be appropriate for the time-frame of the fairy tales. He wrote that the largest and most complex paintings took up to three months to complete. This attention to detail makes these 75 oil paintings very special.
Many original sources were consulted for this edition including: The Golden Goose Book, Perrault’s Fairy Tales, Blue Fairy Book, Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know, Household Stories by the Brothers Grimm, and others.
