Synopsis

Ernest and the Big Itch is a children's picture book about cooperation. Ernest and Chipper each have a problem that can only be solved by cooperating together. Laura Barnes, author, based her story upon real-life animals living at Barnesyard Farm.

Description

This is a beginning reader picture book with beautiful soft color illustrations of Chipper bluebird, of the personality-personified miniature donkey, Ernest, and of the barnyard surroundings where they live. The full-color pictures dominate the pages; the words are not extensive so it is a good learn-to-read book. Ernest and the Big Itch teaches through the actions and decisions of Chipper and Ernest how cooperation can bring about a successful conclusion to a problem.

Why Your Child, Ages 5 - 8, Will Enjoy Ernest and the Big Itch

This is a wonderful animal book for young children about good citizenship and of empathy for another ‘person’. The story doesn't hit one over the head with a ‘message’ but the kindness shown by Chipper and Ernest shines through in the words and pictures of this special book. Your child will also enjoy trying to find the ladybug hidden on each page.

Fairy in a Dairy

If you read A Fairy in the Dairy to a child, it will tickle your funny bone. The play on dairy words is really fun. ("Excitement churned through Buttermilk Hollow" and "Mooo-ve to Buttermilk Hollow. It's udderly delightful.") . .

Caps for Sale

Esphyr Slobodkina has recreated an old folk tale about a peddlar selling caps and a band of monkeys who have their own ideas for those hats, monkey business. Ms. Slobodkina's bright colorful illustrations of the gray, brown, blue, and red caps all balancing on the peddlars head and then on the heads of the mischievious monkeys adds to the fun of Caps for Sale.
