Synopsis
ellington was not a street by renown poet Ntozake Shange pays loving
tribute to the African-American community by remembering
the famous African Americans that visited her home. - a Coretta Scott King Award book
Description
Visiting Ntozake Shange's home
when she was a child were such men as Paul Robeson, Dizzy Gillespie,
Duke Ellington, the Clovers Vocal Group, W.E.B. DuBois, and others.
This book brings these faces into the reader's consciousness.
The last two pages give a little background about these men---a few of the men "who changed the world."
The men of vision are brought to life in the majestic paintings of artist Kadir
Nelson. These men living pre Civil Rights inspire us and
challenge us to this day.
Why I chose this book
I selected this book to read because of the book's name. But, I included it in Nana's Books for Kids because
of the important African Americans told about in its pages and of its positive statement.
The author tells of a home where visionary men gathered for fellowship and where children
were cherished and loved.
