Synopsis

A Dog's Best Friend is an activity book for kids and their dogs that covers a wide variety of topics. If you wonder what breed of dog would be best around young children, Rosenthal makes some suggestions. Want to throw a puppy party? Plans for the party are included. What is the best way to house break a new puppy?

Rosenthal's book is all about dogs, puppies, and their owners written in user-friendly language. She betrays her passion for "man's best friend" and her desire to help owners create safe, loving homes for their pets.

Synopsis

Fifty activities, sidebars, and crafts teach kids how to care for and create a more loving relationship with their dog. Choosing a dog, house-breaking, and teaching your dog new tricks are a three of the topics included.

Description

This is a comprehensive book about choosing the right dog for your family, house-breaking your dog, communicating with it, teaching your dog tricks, making your own dog biscuits, and building a loving relationship with your dog. In short, this is a treasure for anyone who has a dog or is contemplating getting a dog.

The 166-page book is divided into 6 chapters including: Puppy Love, Creature Comforts, Safety First, Nibbles and Treats, Play Time, and Show and Tell Treats. Each chapter is approximately 20 pages with short topics including: “Puppy’s Veterinarian Visits” “Prepare for a Road Trip” “Time to Brush Everyone’s Teeth”, “Plan a Birthday Party” (for a dog), “Obedience Training”, and “Paint Your Dog’s Portrait.”. The book begins with a foreword by John Caruso, director of humane education, The Anti-Cruelty Society and concludes with a children’s reading list, web site listings, pet-care resources, animal organizations and events and more.

Do You Know?

Animal shelters provide the foster care option. If you want to "try-out" a dog and the idea of a pet, call your local shelter for information about a foster care program.
p. xix in A Dog's Best Friend

"Puppies can understand 'come' and 'stay' by 12 weeks of age with a lot of practice and praise." p.13

"Dog breath can be a real problem, so why do some experts suggest giving him garlic? The goodness of garlic is that the odor will penetrate his coat and make it less tasty to fleas. Garlic can also be used as a weight-loss tool by helping the liver and gallbladder work better. The recommended dosage for small dogs is one-fourth to one-half of one clove each day; for larger dogs, feed them one to two cloves each day.
p.49

"Ginny, part schnauzer and part Siberian husky, who was rescued from a pound, walks the streets of her New York town at 4:30 A.M. every day with her owner, Philip Gonzalez. Ginny is an expert tracker and locator of stray cats. Philip finds homes for the stray cats Ginny finds. In November 1998, the Westchester Feline Club awarded ginny their Cat of the Year Award for her good deeds."
