Why a child of age eighteen months to three years will enjoy Barnyard Dance!

I believe rhythm combined with clever text is an unbeatable combination in a book, especially in a picture book for a young child. The rhythmic lilt to the poetry encourages a child to memorize and learn the words. Boynton's language paints a picture of barnyard animals really and truly involved in a type of square dance. This is a great little book that should captivate any young child.

Synopsis

The toddler board book, Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton is a captivating young child's picture book that combines dance steps for farm animals, poetry with feet-stomping rhythm, and humorous beguiling pictures.

The book is 19 pages in length; the text is of larger than normal size. Young children will be encouraged to learn many of the printed words.

Description

Barnyard Dance! is the finger-snapping, feet-jiggling original text that has been set to music and included in Rhinoceros Tap-- the music, lyrics, and CD set also by Sandra Boynton. This offering, even without the music, will have your child moving to the beat of the words and giggling at the antics of all the barnyard animals.

About Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton

If you think of barnyard animals, humorous lyrics, and rhythmic poetic board books, Sandra Boynton may come to mind. She was born, the third child of four girls on April 3, 1953 in Orange, N.J. and spent her growing-up years in Philadelphia. She attended Germantown Friends School where her father taught English. Ms Boynton inherited her father's love of the written word and majored in English at Yale.

During summer vacation, after her junior year, she designed gift cards and traveled throughout the east coast selling the cards to various stores. She continued to design cards throughout her senior year. After her graduation a Chicago company, Recycled Paper Greetings, signed her up. She states that over the past thirty or so years she has designed somewhere between 4,000 and 6,000 greeting cards. Her best known card (in her estimation) is "Hippo Birdie Two Ewes."

Her first book Hippo Goes Berserk was written in 1977 while she was still a student at Yale School of Drama. Since that time she has had (by my counting the listing at the Barnes & Noble site) 39 books published -- both adult and children's.
Since the 90's Boynton has combined her rhythmic prose with music creating book companion CD sets. Rhinoceros Tap and Philadelphia Chickens are examples of this. Chickens, written with composer Michael Ford, features musical performances by several high profile stars.

Sandra Boynton is married to Jamie McEwan, 1972 Olympic bronze medalist in Whitewater Canoe Slalom. They live on a farm in the foothills of the Berkshires. They have four children, all of whom sing songs on the CD Rhinoceros Tap.

Books by Boynton that are available at nanasbooksforkids.com include: Rhinoceros Tap, Philadelphia Chickens, Barnyard Dance

Caps for Sale

Esphyr Slobodkina has recreated an old folk tale about a peddlar selling caps and a band of monkeys who have their own ideas for those hats, monkey business. Ms. Slobodkina's bright colorful illustrations of the gray, brown, blue, and red caps all balancing on the peddlars head and then on the heads of the mischievious monkeys adds to the fun of Caps for Sale.
