Synopsis

"Ah, Music!" is a picture book about all aspects of music--about composers and instruments, about artists and performers, about its history, and about the feelings aroused in the heart and minds of the hearers.

Description

Aliki grew up in a family where music was a part of family life. She shares her knowledge and love of music in her book, "Ah, Music." The 47-page book takes the reader on a journey: exploring what is music?, looking at the creative art of music and its composers, and examining the music itself as it is played by solo instruments, a group of instruments, or an entire orchestra. Aliki introduces the concept of harmony, illustrates the various instruments (including voice) used to make music, and shares a brief history of music from the prehistoric to the classical era. She includes a chapter on the diversity of music and on music therapy. She concludes with words of encouragement to a young musician. "Ah, Music" explores music from the perspective of Western tradition.--an ALA Booklist Youth Arts Top 10

About Aliki

Aliki

Aliki Liacouras was born in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey on September 3. She attended school in Philadelphia and the suburb of Yeadon, Pennsylvania. Even at a young age art was part of her soul. She drew constantly, attended Saturday art classes, and drew some more. She also developed a love of music. Her interest in art led her to attend Philadelphia Museum College of Art.

Her first job upon graduation was in the display department of J. C. Penney Co. in New York. Following that position Aliki developed her own greeting card line, taught children’s art classes and adult ceramic classes.

In 1956 she traveled abroad for 6 months, painting, sketching, and visiting her parents native land of Greece. She also spent some time in Florence, Italy. It was here that she met Franz Brandenberg, whom she married in March of 1957.

The couple moved to Berne, Switzerland. In Switzerland Aliki investigated the legend of William Tell and created her first illustrated picture book.

Since those early days Aliki has been a prolific writer and illustrator of both fiction and non fiction books for children. She has also illustrated over 50 books for other authors including Joanna Cole and her husband, Franz Brandenberg.

The Brandenbergs now live in London. They have three children.
